"It's something you cannot put in words - something that you feel but you cannot express it," Bernardin's wife, Mitzi, said of the loss this week from her home in France. The 73-year-old Bernardin had been attempting a transatlantic sail from North Carolina to his native France, in preparation for Longue Route 2018 - an event he himself was organizing. His small boat, Crazy Horse, was found 700 miles off the coast of Cape Cod in October, six weeks after the last message from its GPS. "But for how much longer?"īernardin, a one-time resident of North Kingstown and a renowned sailor in Rhode Island throughout the 1980s and 1990s, was lost at sea late this summer. "It was a simple life, with no frills, a step back into the past," Bernardin wrote in his book, "Sailing around the World," which chronicled his three-year circumnavigation of the globe with his wife and young son in the late 1990s. It was during a month spent in Alvor, on the southern coast of Portugal, that Guy Bernardin marveled at the resilience of the older residents - the fishermen on the docks still at work while a younger generation looked elsewhere for a future.
